In today’s world, many people create multiple UPI IDs to manage different bank accounts or to use different payment apps. Over time, you might find yourself with several UPI IDs and decide that some of them are no longer needed. Or, perhaps you’re switching to a different UPI app and want to delete your old IDs to keep things simple and organised. Whatever the reason, deleting an old UPI ID is a practical step to avoid confusion and ensure your payment methods are streamlined. In this blog, we'll guide you through the process of permanently deleting your UPI ID, so you can stay on top of your digital payments with ease.
How To Delete UPI ID?
If you no longer want to use your UPI ID, you have a few options for deleting it. One option is to completely close your UPI account by unlinking it from the app. When you decide to use UPI again, you’ll be assigned a new UPI ID. Alternatively, you can disable the UPI service linked to your bank account by contacting your bank. This may involve submitting a formal request, and once the bank processes it, your UPI ID will be permanently removed from your account.
Some banks also allow you to manage UPI services through their Net Banking platform, which might save you some time and effort. It's always a good idea to check with your bank to see which method works best for you.

What Happens When You Deactivate UPI ID?
When you deactivate your UPI ID, it means you no longer have access to your virtual payment address. As a result, you can't make or receive payments through UPI-based apps, and using QR codes for transactions with merchants or friends will no longer work. However, there are still other ways to pay or transfer money, such as using mobile wallets, debit/credit cards, or services like Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS). You can also rely on Internet banking features like NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS for transferring funds smoothly.
In case you suspect that someone may have gained unauthorised access to your UPI ID, banks let you block it to protect your account from fraud. But blocking your UPI ID isn't the only way to secure your account. Regularly changing your UPI PIN or using biometric authentication, such as fingerprints or face recognition, can strengthen the security of your account and prevent unauthorised access.
