Importance of mobile number for your bank account

Here are some reasons why having an updated mobile number for your bank account is important:

  • Security: Your mobile number is often used for two-factor authentication (2FA) and to send One-Time Passwords (OTPs) for every online transaction, providing an extra layer of security for your bank account. Two-factor authentication adds a critical security measure by requiring not just your password, but also a unique code sent to your mobile number, to access your account. This ensures that even someone who obtains your password cannot access your account without the OTP. Furthermore, OTPs are used to verify each transaction's legitimacy, protecting you from unauthorised access and fraudulent activities.
  • Important notifications: Your bank may send you important notifications about your account activity, such as transaction alerts, balance updates, new services and fraud alerts.
  • Seamless Online Banking Access: Many banks enable mobile banking app enrollment and verification using your registered mobile number. This simplifies the process of accessing your bank account and managing your finances on the go.
  • Identity verification: Your mobile number plays a crucial role in verifying your identity when logging in or speaking with customer service representatives. When you attempt to access your online banking account, the bank often sends a verification code or OTP to your registered mobile number to confirm your identity. This step ensures that only you, as the account holder, can access your financial information, even if someone else knows your login credentials.
  • Easy access to services: Many banking services, such as transaction alerts and account statements, can easily be checked with your mobile number linked.

An updated mobile number linked to your bank account is crucial for several reasons. It ensures you receive timely transaction notifications, helping you monitor your account activity in real time. This can be essential for identifying unauthorised transactions or potential fraud, allowing you to act quickly. An updated mobile number also facilitates seamless communication with your bank, ensuring you receive important updates, alerts, and verification codes for online banking transactions. It also simplifies the process of resetting passwords and accessing customer support. Keeping your mobile number current with your bank is a key aspect of maintaining the security and efficiency of your banking experience.
