Slowly but steadily, the rate of usage of digital payment systems in India has increased to the point that today, 40% of the payments are done digitally. UPI, which was launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has become the most widely used payment system in India. This popularity has been gained through providing convenience along with speed and security. Just one application and one UPI ID are all that’s needed to make it work. At the same time doubt may arise if that’s the limit or if we can have more than one UPI ID. We’ll address this doubt in this article.

How Many UPI IDs Can I Have?

From one Google Pay account, 4 UPI IDs can be made. Additional UPI IDs can be created if a further need arises by setting up a new Google Pay account.

Can I Have Multiple UPI IDs for the Same Bank Account?

In short, yes you can. You can have multiple UPI IDs for the same bank account. This is useful when you need to segregate your payments across different handles or even when your current UPI ID gets technical issues.

For example, if you have an account with the State Bank of India, its app ‘YONO’ will allow you to have a UPI ID. As the need for more arises, you can go to PhonePe or PayTM, where the UPI IDs will have different endings than what YONO will give, depending on the app you’re using.

But know that in no way will this affect your transaction process. Payments will still be coming from the very bank account you have linked. However, in this way, you can select the UPI ID you feel is the best for that transaction, also allowing you to navigate through the times of high traffic on the UPI networks better. This also means you could have one UPI ID for personal payments, another for business transactions, and perhaps a third to share with friends or family.

Can I Have Multiple UPI IDs for the Same Mobile Number?

Now, if you want multiple UPI IDs for the same mobile number, that’s possible as well. Having your bank account and multiple payment apps on the same mobile number will allow you to go for more than one UPI ID.

Even if you have multiple accounts in different banks, using the same mobile number for opening all the bank accounts will mean you can have different UPI IDs for the same mobile number.

How To Create Multiple UPI IDs with Google Pay

Creating multiple UPI IDs on Google Pay is extremely simple. The number of IDs can go up to 4 here. Follow these easy steps and get it done real quick:

  1. Open the Google Pay app on your mobile.
  2. Tap on your profile picture present in the top right corner.
  3. Select ‘Bank accounts’.
  4. Choose the bank account with which you want to create a new UPI ID.
  5. Tap on ‘UPI IDs’.
  6. Tap on the arrow beside the ‘x/y UPI IDs added’ section.

How To Create Multiple UPI IDs with PhonePe

If you'd rather use PhonePe and need more than one UPI ID for any reason- convenience or better organization, this app too makes the process really quick and easy. Just a few taps, and you’ll have generated new UPI IDs with the following process:

  1. Open the PhonePe app and tap on your profile picture from the home screen.
  2. Scroll to your right and select the relevant bank account under the ‘Payment Methods’ section. Alternatively, you can also tap on ‘View all Payment Methods’ for the same.
  3. Tap on the ‘+’ icon next to the UPI handle.
  4. Either choose a UPI ID from the existing options or create a new one according to the existing guidelines.
  5. Tap Create to finalise the new UPI ID.

Note: On PhonePe, creating multiple UPI IDs for each bank account with specific handles is allowed, making sure you don’t get stuck with too much clutter.

Does Having Extra UPI IDs Change Anything?

Nothing about how your transactions work will change. No matter how many UPI IDs you have, the payments will always be routed from your linked bank account. No effect on the amount of security present either. The only difference you’ll feel will be that with more UPI IDs, you will have more options to complete your transactions with. If one UPI ID faces network issues, you will be able to simply switch to another.

FAQs

  1. Are There Any Limits on the Number of UPI IDs I Can Have?

Yes, most UPI apps will allow you to have up to 4 UPI IDs per bank account. However, these limits can differ depending on which app and bank you are connected to.

  2. Is It Safe To Share My UPI ID?

Usually, it’s safe enough to share your UPI ID as it functions much similarly to sharing a bank account number for receiving payments. But you should never share your UPI PIN or OTP, as these are needed for authorising transactions.

  3. How Do I Delete/Deactivate My UPI ID?

To delete or deactivate your UPI ID, go to the settings in your UPI app, be it Google Pay or PhonePe, select the bank account associated with the ID, select 'Manage UPI IDs' and click on the trash icon.
